With another successfulcommencementbehind us, recent High Point University graduates are preparing to commence prestigious career paths around the world at Fortune 500 companies, international service programs, public school systems, top-tier law, medical and graduate school programs, and many other esteemed organizations thanks to their journey at HPU. Here’s a glimpse of one extraordinary senior from the Class of 2017:
Name: Rachel Callaway
Hometown: Simi Valley, California
Major: Callaway graduated with a major in Strategic Communication on May 6.
Post-graduation plans: Callaway begins a communication internship with the City of Charlotte as the Charlotte Water Social Media Manager. She will build social media platforms for Charlotte’s Water supply, create and manage original content while using analytics to produce appropriate works. Callaway is also a full-time graduate student at HPU, in her final year of the BA-MA Communication program.
How HPU helped you get there:“The leadership roles played an important role by teaching me how to work with people my age, as well as people who are older and younger. I also learned how to work with different size groups for a common goal, and as a leader how I should work to accomplish the goals I needed.”
Most impactful mentor at HPU: “My most impactful mentor at HPU would be Dr. Brandon Lenoir. He helped me realize that there are many different paths to your goals. He helped me inside the classroom as a learner, but also professionally as a young person going into the real world. He wasn’t afraid to give constructive criticism and praise the good.”
Most impactful moment at HPU: “The most impactful moment I had at HPU was winning the SGA Presidency. It was a moment when I realized that other people believed in me and who I was as a leader. It pushed me to not be afraid to go for the big things.”
Advice for underclassmen: “Breathe. Things will work out, no matter how much it seems like everything is against you. You have unique qualities that employers will want. It’s just knowing that everything takes time.”
